ARTIST'S STATEMENT

Each work represents a story, but is represented in a way that is non-sequential and different than in traditional forms of storytelling. In the paper works, I use a combination of various types of paper including filmy Japanese rice paper – multiple layers and colors, one on top of the other. The paper is intermixed with watercolor, acrylic, oil pastels, and soft pastels to create color, light, depth and texture. This technique produces the sensuous quality that dominates the work.

I work in much the same technique on canvas, often following a form developed in studies. I work from the edges of the canvas towards the center, adding veils of acrylic; making many of the layers almost transparent so as to give the work a delicate three dimensional feeling. I work to achieve the effect of having the work extend beyond the edges of the canvas. By establishing a certain mystery each piece requires the viewer to draw on his or her own emotions and in that way is drawn into the work.
